    On 3 November 2018, QME completed the first batch of physical settlement of spot aluminium oxide, 2000 tonnes of which were successfully loaded in Jiaozuo, Henan and delivered to Inner Mongolia by railway trucks.

    24 October 2018, Charles Li, Chief Executive of HKEX and Chairman of QME, joined Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meeting session with Hong Kong corporations and Hong Kong teenagers in Qianhai.

    On 19 October 2018, QME officially made debut with trading in alumina. The first spot transaction saw 3,000 tonnes of alumina changed hands at a price of RMB3,030 a tonne, recording the first benchmark pricing of spot alumina based on actual transactions in mainland China.

    On 15 November 2016, Xinwen Lianbo, a CCTV’s programme, introduced HKEX’s idea of establishing QME as part of the efforts to promulgate President Xi’s proposition about “opening up and exploring for breakthroughs” put forward in his visit to Qianhai.

    On 12 October 2016, Li Keqiang, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and Premier of the State Council, visited Shenzhen and stopped by HKEX QME’s booth in 2016 National Mass Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week. HKEX Chief Executive Charles Li introduced the commodity trading platform in Qianhai to Premier Li.

    On 6 September 2016, HKEX and the Authority of Qianhai in Shenzhen signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a solid basis for advancing the exchange’s spot commodities initiatives.

    In February 2016, HKEX rolled out its three-year strategic plan and proposed a Commodities Connect mechanism, which plans to develop a spot commodities trading platform in the Mainland market in order to service the real economy, with a view to producing and internationalising ‘Chinese benchmarks’.
